Before the move I had a total of 3 seedlings. One met it’s demise via cat, but the other two were doing quite well. I took extra care to get them to Philadelphia. The plan was to have them ride in the cab of the moving truck with us, which worked out alright for all of 10 minutes. The box fell, and the pot broke. Dirt everywhere.
I was pretty discouraged at that point, but Christina convinced me the one would be just fine. and it is!

I’ve just let it grow, but apparently I’m supposed to cut the roots off, so they will regrow in horizontal fashion, rather than downward. I’m very nervous about this… I’ll seek advice from some bonsai folk.

I have some Jack Pine seeds germinating too. I hope those go as well as this one. Maybe when I’m old, they’ll all still be around. Only time will tell I suppose.

Soon, and by sooner I mean 20 years from now, hopefully it’ll look something this:

I can’t seem to find any photos of my old Japanese Spruce. I do believe they were tossed out, among other fairly important things that seem to have fallen victim to divorce.
Oh well. Anyway, I think I’ll need a name for this little guy. Any ideas?

I’m so excited! I ordered a Bonsai starter kit from Trents fundraiser at school on Sept 9th. Japanese Black Pines to be precise. I haven’t had a Bonsai in a few years, so I figured, what the hell. If it was a ‘mallsai’, I wouldn’t have bothered, but this came with a packet of seeds, a strange block of soil, and a little ceramic pot. Not knowing where the seeds came from is much better than knowing a mallsai isn’t likely to survive a week. Poor trees. (I’m not a hippy)

It’s been almost a month since I planted the first 3 seeds, and to my surprise today, one has sprouted!

Needless to say, I can’t wait to tell Trent. I hope the others sprout too. That being said, it looks like I’m in the market for a nicer pot after all.
