Pumpkin Brew Review
Oct 22nd, 2008 by fynflood
I stopped by Oades yesterday and picked up 5 Pumpkin beers. Fall, and the Halloween season in general, require all thing pumpkin. Beer is no exception.
Pictured above are the 5 beers, ordered from left to right, the ones I like best to the one I thought was awful.
I’ll go over each in a non-beersnob fasion. I drank all 5 right out of the bottle, so don’t expect anything fancy about how it’s head was, and easy of pour, blah blah.
Dogfish Head Punkin Ale, from Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton Delaware. The best, and most expensive of the 5. This beer had a wonderful pumpkin smell, and a wonderful pumpkin taste. I honeslty enjoyed every last drop of this.
America’s Original Pumpkin Ale, from Buffalo Bill’s Brewery (Pyramin Breweries Inc. WA, OR and CA). My second favortie of the 5. A true pumpkin taste, this time with some obvious spices. The cinnamon was pretty strong, but not too strong. There was a hint of allspice as well. This one and the Dogfish Head were the two best pumpkin brews I’ve ever had.
Ichabod, from New Holland Brewing Co. in Holland MI. I really wanted to try this draft at Alefest, sadly it was gone when I arrived. I was a little disapointed in this one. I think I was excited about it’s label. It wasn’t gross, but it was just… eh. No real pumpkin flavors going on here. Not much to say about this one.
Screamin Pumpkin Spiced Ale, from Michigan Brewing Co. in Webberville MI. Man, this initially, is a fantastic beer. If you like Pumpkin Rolls, you’ll love it. Like a pumpkin roll, you can’t eat the whole thing. I felt the same way about this. The first half was like dessert in a bottle. The taste and the smell, pumpkin roll. Awesome to start, too sweet to finish (Which is why it came behind the Ichabod).
Pumpkin Ale, from O’Fallon Brewery in O’Fallon MO. This one is kinda gross. No real pumpkin going on here either. Pretty bland… Nothing else worth mention. Choose something else if this is the only pumpkin brew at your regular beer spot. I think I might have had this one last year too at my friend Stevens.. in fact, I believe there’s one still in his fridge, for obvious reasons.
